Magnifying Glass
Project Overview
I created a magnifying glass in ME 103: Design and Manufacturing. In this project, I learned how to use various machines in the Product Realization Lab while following an operations sequence with tight specs. Through this process, I gained confidence on the machines while also learning about patience and precision.
Parts
Ring, Lug, Handle, Lens
Processes
Lathe, Mill, Silver Brazing, Polishing
Ring
I used the lathe to create the brass ring of the magnifying glass. On my first attempt, I cut too large of a hole while using the boring bar to cut the center hole. I had to restart, and my second attempt went smoothly.
Lug
I used the mill to create the brass lug, which connects the handle and ring.
Handle
I used the lathe to create the plastic handle. It was so satisfying when it screwed perfectly into the lug!
Silver Brazing
Lens
I created the lens out of acrylic on the lathe, and I sanded and polished it until it was clear. Then I inserted it into the ring along with a spring to keep it in place.
