Rise: Motor Characterization
Project Overview
In a project for ME 104: Mechanical Systems Design, I designed and conducted experiments to identify the
values of key motor and gearbox characteristics including coil resistance, motor constant, motor friction, and per-stage gear transmission efficiency. I then determined the motor operating point, gearbox gear ratio and capstan radius that minimize time to lift a load.
Processes/Tools
SOLIDWORKS, 3D Printing, Motor Characterization
My Role
I used back-of-the-envelope analysis, computational analysis, and empirical tests, iteratively, to make my selections and optimize my motor. I assembled the motor and gearbox from a provided kit, designed the capstan using my 3D printer, and performed tests to verify lifting time.
